It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see

Mid April and the morning sun was starting to show its face earlier and earlier as we entered into spring.
Setting my alarm for what felt like silly o’clock after a long winter of more sociable sunrise times, I had decided to stay local to my home for this shoot as a busy day in work lay before me.
Arriving at location I was greeted with some quite cold conditions and the morning dew from the fields had filled the air with what was now a blanket of dense fog that spread in each direction all around me.
With the sunrise prediction at bit interrupted by a huge bank of cloud that lay low on the horizon my original plan of a colourful reflections shot had been put on hold until further notice, and I was now on the hunt for my next composition.
Making my way around the local area with camera in hand I was soon greeted by a huge blast of light that appeared as the sun began to show its face through a break in the thick cloud.
Infront of me lay this old rickety barbed wire fence and as the light rays projected down and bounced up from the wet grass the shadows from the old wooden posts had literally lept out Infront of me. The misty conditions were really adding effect to what I was seeing and my initial thoughts of ‘can I turn this fence into a picture’ were soon confirmed.
Going in at low level to make the fence appear as the dominant subject within the picture, I was now able to include the silhouette of this lovely old tree, alongside the shadows and posts to also give the ever familiar leading line effect to keep the character of the image alive.
For the next few minutes the sun shone down and the mist had really come alive to add even more mood to my idea.
All in all a great image and one that when id asked myself ‘can I make this fence into a nice picture’ the answer that came about was, its not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
