Sunsets & Sailboats

The West Kirby yachts are always at the forefront of my photography mind at this time of year and while recently working locally a close eye had been kept on these boats waiting for an opportunity to catch a shot of them all laying in a uniform line during sunset.
Setting the bar quite high with regards to expectations for this shot a good few things had to come together to make it possible. Firstly a low tide had to be in line with the sunset time, secondly the wind had to be right as the last tide receded to make sure the yatchs all lay in the same position with their backs to the sun, and thirdly some colour had to be on the cards to make the image a success.
Asking quite alot of mother nature, these kind of shots are really hard to come by as very rarely does everything work in our favour.
On this particular evening I had left work around tea time and with a very slight breeze and a low tide time of just before nine o’clock tonight was another attempt after three failed outings.
The sun had been high in the sky all day and as the evening drew in so did the cloud cover and that daunting feeling of no sunset colour was dominating my thought process.
After a quick bite to eat I had grabbed my camera equipment, threw the wellies in the the van and off I went back to Westkirby. Arriving with an hour or so spare to sunset time and picking out my desired composition line from Cubbins Green, I had now started the twenty minute yomp through the mud out to these boats. Stil in two minds as to whether the sunset would play ball, alls I could do was hope and pray that this time out somebody would be looking down on me and reward me for my efforts with some colour.
All set up on the mud with five chosen yatchs in my viewfinder, my composition was decided and with not long to go until the sun dipped below the horizon the sky had began to become very exciting. For the last hour atleast the cloud cover had really dominated and stopped any light from getting through and conditions had been less than ideal, but as the clock ticked down to darkness the last fifteen minutes really came alive. A huge break on the horizon had turned into a magnificent yellow colour as the sun plummeted and light rays could be seen bursting through every small gap within the clouds. The wet mud once again acted as my reflective surface as the beautiful light bounced back up creating a wonderful arrangement of colour and really complementing the green Hull of the first yatch in my chosen composition.
The nxt few minutes were spent snapping away and with a huge mixture of emotions running through my head a small tip of my hat was in order and a little Thank you to the photography gods for eventually  helping to bring this image together.
